Unusual Facts about Me

I have a ranchette on the outskirts of Austin, Texas. I don’t have kids, but I have a dog.

I also have a commune of wild cats living outside my door, along with deer, raccoons, porcupines, armadillos, and the occasional spooky scorpion.

I love to write, but I’m a lousy artist. Basically I can draw stick people.

I foster homeless dogs because I’m a sucker for sad animals.

In the 4th grade spelling bee I lost with the word m-o-n-o-t-o-n-o-u-s.

I love to travel.  I spent two years working at a refugee camp in Thailand,  and also a good amount of time in India, China, Northern Ireland, and other delightfully enchanting places.

Currently, I’m living on a Honduran island working on my next books and frolicking in the sand.

I was a Girl Scout for lots of years---and sold about a million cookies.

I have three older sisters, which makes me the baby.

I knew I wanted to be a writer in elementary school.

My mom has read just about everything I’ve written since the first grade. She’s a very, very good mom.

My first book was written in the second grade. The title is The Ugly Girl and is about my sister. It’s a dark comedy.

My second novel, written in the third grade, is about 24 deformed teddy bears.

I love coffee (see all of Sarajo’s coffee cups in Noonie!) but I don’t like tea (boring ).

I try to write about five days out of the week. When I’m really excited I write in the middle of the night.

When I have writer’s block I chew on my nails or on my pen, I bake cookies, I hike with my dog, or I simply work on another book-in-progress.

I am a little looney like Noonie; I’m currently working on four different books.

If I’m not writing then you can find me staring at my computer...or out the window.

Other (less interesting) Tidbits

I have a M.A. in playwriting from the University of New Mexico, and a M.F.A. in Writing from the University of Texas at Austin. My plays have been produced across the country, and some have won awards. Noonie’s Masterpiece was originally a play. I was a Michener Fellow at the University of Texas, and a Jerome Fellow at the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis. I also had a writing residency at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Red Wing, MN.

I’m grateful to those people and organizations who gave me the time and financial support so I could simply write.
